The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) today released its top technology priorities for 2019, which are determined via voting by forty-nine state CIOs.

The top ten priorities are:

  1. Security and Risk Management;
  2. Cloud Services;
  3. Consolidation/Optimization;
  4. Digital Government;
  5. Broadband/Wireless Connectivity;
  6. Budget, Cost Control, Fiscal Management;
  7. Customer Relationship Management;
  8. Data Management and Analytics;
  9. Enterprise IT Governance; and
  10. Identity and Access Management.

“In addition to the duty to safeguard state systems and citizen information, increasing efficiency and fostering innovation are clearly indicated as key objectives for state CIOs in 2019”, said James Collins, NASCIO president and CIO for the state of Delaware. “It is promising to see that states also plan to focus on expanding partnerships and leveraging the power of data analytics for public good. Partnerships with state agencies and private IT companies are key ingredients for transitioning to NASCIO’s ‘CIO as Broker’ operating model.”

If you’re having deja vu, don’t worry – next year’s list is very similar to NASCIO’s 2018 priorities. The top four are identical. One major difference is the growing importance of broadband. Last year it came in seventh on the list but jumped to fifth for 2019. Additionally, customer relationship management and identity access management did not appear on last year’s list.

NASCIO said it uses the ranking to develop its “strategic areas of focus” for the year ahead, as they develop new committees and working groups and plan for its annual conferences.
