The University of Arizona has hired David Ebert as the university’s first-ever chief AI and data science officer.

Reporting to the university’s senior vice president for research, innovation and impact, Ebert is set to lead an interdisciplinary strategy aimed at expanding the university’s AI innovation, research capabilities, and global leadership in the responsible application of machine learning technologies.

He will hold a newly created Computer Science Engineering Endowed Innovation Chair at the university, which is supported by a $3.5 million gift to the school.

Ebert also will join the College of Engineering as a tenured professor in the university’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He will play a key role in developing the college’s new computer science engineering program, helping to shape future faculty hires and research initiatives.

Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Ebert served as the Gallogly Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges at the University of Oklahoma. He was also the university’s chief AI officer and associate vice president for research and partnerships.

“Dr. Ebert brings extraordinary expertise in data visualization, explainable AI and interactive machine learning to our institution,” said Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, the University of Arizona’s senior vice president for Research, Innovation & Impact. “His leadership will be transformational as we integrate AI and data science across the university and the state, expanding our research and operational impact while training the next generation of innovators.”

Ebert’s appointment comes as the University of Arizona intensifies its focus on emerging technologies to align with national priorities in AI and data-driven research. His work will span academic disciplines and help secure research funding for projects aimed at addressing challenges in health, environment, security, space, and the arts.
