The state of Oregon will provide training for all of its employees on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to encourage responsible use of the technology.

Training will be offered through a partnership between solutions integrator Enterprise Information Services (EIS) and InnovateUS, an online learning initiative funded through grants that provides public workers with free training on digital and AI skills.

“Generative AI is vastly developing, and this training aligns with the work of the State Government Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council that recognized the future of government depends first and foremost on people, supported by technology” said Terrence Woods, Oregon’s chief information officer, in a statement

“This opportunity will provide our workforce with the knowledge and skills to use generative AI in their work responsibly, securely, and effectively,” he continued.

Courses will feature “practical examples and exercises” to train workers on responsible AI use and will be used to enable state agencies to educate its employees to “appropriately utilize the modern capabilities of GenAI, while also mitigating its potential issues.”

“It supports the goal of being more effective stewards of public resources,” said the state in its announcement of the training effort.

GenAI is used by the state to enhance government efficiency, improve customer service, streamline processes, and empower its workforce, according to the release.
