Maryland’s Department of Information Technology (DoIT) has rolled out Google Workspace with Gemini across 59 agencies, giving almost 43,000 state employees access to generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, and 12,500 are active users, according to a press release.
Gemini’s GenAI tools are provided at no additional cost for agencies already using Google Workspace. The rollout positions about 30% of the state’s workforce to use AI to speed projects and boost productivity, according to the state.
According to DoIT, agencies are using Gemini for tasks that include creating on-demand website wireframes, building no-code chatbots to query long documents, analyzing sentiment in raw datasets, and generating talking points for presentations. The state highlighted common use cases such as drafting communications, analyzing data, retrieving information, and brainstorming as areas that can translate into measurable time savings for program staff.
“Generative AI has tremendous potential to help our workforce accomplish repetitive tasks in less time, giving them more time to serve Marylanders,” DoIT Secretary Katie Savage said in a statement. “The scale of adoption and experimentation across the Moore Miller administration is helping the state be more productive right now while planting the seeds for future innovation.”
The rollout is part of the Gov. Wes Moore administration’s push to seed responsible AI experimentation at scale. All AI systems used by the state must comply with Maryland’s Responsible Use Policy, and the Governor’s AI Subcabinet is coordinating efforts to create an AI-literate workforce.
“The speed at which Maryland’s state workforce has adopted Google Workspace is a testament to their forward-thinking leadership and commitment to public sector innovation,” said Matthew Schneider, managing director, U.S. Education, State & Local Government, Google Public Sector. “We are proud to partner with the DoIT to provide a secure and scalable AI platform that enables Maryland state staff to address their most complex, high-priority issues, ensuring better and faster results for residents.”
