Iron Mountain expanded its Pennsylvania data center by 20,000 square feet and three megawatts of capacity last week in order to attract Federal and state government customers.
The Boyers, Pa., data center broke ground Friday on its new welcome center, which will increase the physical security capabilities of the facility located 200 feet underground. The welcome center also offers conference rooms, office space, a lounge, a kitchen, and parking.
Iron Mountain added Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking to data center network operations to increase the security of server and hardware shipments to the data center.
The company also announced that the data center will run on 100 percent renewable energy by December.
Iron Mountain said that its data center’s capabilities, which also include metered power options, data center infrastructure management, and real-time utilization transparency, could help Federal agencies comply with the Data Center Optimization Initiative.
“Iron Mountain has been a great partner here in Butler County, becoming one of the county’s largest employers and working hard to ensure those jobs and the resulting economic impact benefit our local area,” said State Rep. Tedd Nesbit. “Iron Mountain continues to invest in its Boyers facility, and that signals good news for the company’s continued presence in western Pennsylvania.”
Iron Mountain already works with some Federal agencies, with more than 620 of its 20,000 employees having a clearance to support Federal records management contracts. The company’s data centers dedicated to Federal information are designed in accordance with advice from Federal compliance officers, National Archives and Records Administration employees, and security professionals.
Iron Mountain’s Adaptive Federal Storage Services help agencies customize their own data center needs, create flexible options for future data needs, and support best-practice records management operations, according to a report from the company.
The expanded data center also aims to attract health care, financial, and state government data.
State Sen. Scott Hutchinson attended Iron Mountain’s groundbreaking ceremony. “It’s encouraging to see the company continue to make significant investments in our community,” said Hutchinson. “I look forward to finding new ways that the commonwealth can partner with Iron Mountain to promote job growth in our region.”
