To keep its roads clear, Florida is turning to technology. The state has contracted with Iteris, a smart mobility infrastructure management provider, to launch a $5 million multi-year initiative intended to improve traffic flow and safety, while also reducing carbon emissions.
Iteris will use cloud computing, artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, advisory services, and managed services to get to that goal. As part of the project, which is focused on the Tampa Bay metro area, Iteris will provide arterial management services for approximately 500 intersections across major corridors.
The area targeted for the project has 2.8 million residents, and houses nearly 20 percent of the state’s signalized intersections. Iteris said its services will improve traffic flow and reduce carbon emissions throughout Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and the five-county area surrounding Tampa Bay.
Iteris is expected to provide services including performance monitoring and reporting, traffic signal timing plan updates, development and implementation of incident diversion routes, citizen comment response and resolution, and regular field inspections for maintenance.
