The state of Florida hired Nancy Sampson as its first chief data officer (CDO). Sampson, who will provide vision and strategy for all data management activities for the state, started in the new role on Oct. 27.
The CDO will serve as a champion for global data management, governance, quality, and vendor relationships across the state enterprise, according to the Florida Agency for State Technology (AST). The CDO will work with state agencies, the legislature, key stakeholders, and the public to align business and technology initiatives as well as partner public and private sector needs. According to the AST, Sampson will have until June 30, 2018, to create an enterprise data inventory for the state. The data inventory is considered the first step in AST’s goal of supporting a data-driven government enterprise.
Before stepping into the CDO role, Sampson served as the director of information technology services at the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS), Division of Rehabilitation and Liquidation. In that position, Sampson was responsible for the division’s IT resources and managed the division’s IT staff. Sampson received her undergraduate degree from Tufts University and received her Master of Arts from Boston College.
