The EastWest Institute (EWI) on Thursday released a new report to provide guidance on how to make tomorrow’s “smart cities” secure and safe through effective technology management by executives and administrators. The guide provides recommended actions and identifies challenges in cybersecurity, cyber resilience, privacy and data protection, and collaboration and coordination in governance.
“This guide was developed to recognize and support all key stakeholders involved–municipalities, governments, urban planners, businesses, and community leaders–to help them safeguard Smart Cities for the future,” said Bruce McConnell, head of the institute’s Global Cooperation in Cyberspace program and EWI Global Vice President, who co-authored the report.
The report explains that smart cities strategies can improve operations and management of city public services such as transportation, power, water, and communications. While there are plenty of opportunities, the EastWest Institute recognizes there are also risks to those strategies including exacerbating societal inequalities, attracting malicious actors, and cascading failures across multiple infrastructures.
