Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, the city of Boca Raton, Fla., is implementing its School Zone Safety Program and using automatic speed cameras to enhance safety for students and school staff.

The RedSpeed camera system will be active and citations will be automatically issued during arrival and dismissal times – when the school zone lights are flashing.

According to the city, drivers will be cited if they exceed the school zone limit by over 10 mph. All fines will be $100 with no processing fee and are considered a civil infraction, with no points or insurance increases.

“Camera enforcement systems are set to capture data specified by Palm Beach County/City of Boca Raton within local, state, and federal guidelines. This data will include photographic stills of the vehicle, and the license plate. It will also include the date, time, location, and speed,” the Boca Raton Police Department said in a Q&A about the program.

“All data is encrypted and transmitted to a secure central server, where it is digitally signed to prevent interception and manipulation, ensuring top-level protection for the chain of custody,” it added. “Original images and data are securely stored in a data vault.”

The cameras are being installed as the result of House Bill 657, which was signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023.

In the first phase, the cameras will be implemented at Addison Mizner Elementary School, J.C. Mitchell Elementary School, and Boca Raton Community High School.

Later in the school year, the cameras will then be rolled out to Blue Lake Elementary School, Calusa Elementary School, Omni Middle School, and Spanish River Community High School.

“Traffic studies found hundreds of drivers exceed more than 10+ mph over the speed limit in school zones every day. Installing school zone cameras has proven to reduce speeds and improve safety,” the police department said.
