The New Mexico state Senate has unanimously confirmed Manny Barreras as cabinet secretary for the Department of Information Technology (DoIT).
“Technology is the backbone of efficient government service – Cabinet Secretary Barreras understands this,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “His expertise and vision for modernizing our technology systems will help improve how New Mexicans interact with state government.”
Barreras was initially appointed to the role by Gov. Lujan Grisham in September 2024, but was only confirmed by the Senate on March 3.
“Manny Barreras is exceptionally qualified for this role. He is a dedicated public servant who also brings with him decades of private sector experience in critical technology-related fields such as public safety communications and network security,” said state Sen. Michael Padilla. “I was honored to sponsor his appointment in the Senate and thank Governor Lujan Grisham for selecting him to lead the Department of Information Technology.”
Prior to joining the state government, Barreras had a 22-year career in sales, business development, and government relations. This experience enables Barreras to bring “an unparalleled depth of knowledge and expertise to this role,” according to the governor’s office.
Most recently, Barreras served as Senior Territory Account Manager for New Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Arizona for Motorola.
“I am truly honored and deeply appreciative of the trust the Governor and the Legislature have placed in me,” said Secretary Barreras. “My vision is clear: to modernize, secure, and expand New Mexico’s digital infrastructure by advancing innovation and information technology service offerings from New Mexico DoIT, for the executive agencies in New Mexico.”
“I am also dedicated to continuing the expansion of the NM Digital Trunked Radio System (DTRS) throughout the state to enhance and improve coverage and interoperability throughout the state,” he said.
