The University of Minnesota has named Tarek Tomes vice president for information technology and chief information officer (CIO), effective March 16.
Tomes will report to Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations Gregg Goldman.
Tomes is a very familiar face in Minnesota IT circles.
He comes to the new job from state government where he was state CIO since 2019, along with serving as the state’s commissioner of IT services and a member of the governor’s cabinet.
“Commissioner Tomes helped lead Minnesota through some of the most complex technological challenges our state has ever faced,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in announcing Tomes’ departure as the state CIO on Feb. 6.
“Minnesota is stronger because of his service, and I am deeply grateful for his contributions,” the governor said.
Deputy Commissioner Jon Eichten will succeed Tomes as commissioner of Minnesota IT Services on March 16.
