Syracuse University has launched a new partnership with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence research and safety company, to provide campuswide access to Claude for Education, an AI platform designed specifically for academic use.

The initiative makes Syracuse one of the first U.S. universities to offer institution-wide access to the advanced AI tool.

“Expanding access to Claude for all members of our community is another step in making Syracuse University the most digitally connected campus in America,” Jeff Rubin, senior vice president and chief digital officer, said in a press release. “By equipping every student, faculty member and staff member with Claude, we’re not only fueling innovation, but also preparing our community to navigate, critique and co-create with AI in real-world contexts.”

Claude for Education will be available to all students, faculty, and staff, supporting academic research, administrative tasks, creative projects, and teaching.

The platform features enhanced usage limits, collaborative tools for group work, the ability to process lengthy documents, and academic integrity functions designed to guide ethical AI use. It also employs a privacy-first design that does not use student or educator data for training, safeguarding academic work.

The partnership is part of the university’s broader efforts to maintain its position as a leading digitally connected campus.

The university has previously invested in digital infrastructure, including early adoption of campus fiber networks and the deployment of a private 5G network at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Lois Agnew, vice chancellor, provost, and chief academic officer, noted that making Claude available to the university community provides a trusted platform to harness AI’s potential across classrooms, labs, and creative endeavors.

“By making Claude available to everyone at Syracuse, we are providing a safe, trusted, ethical and powerful platform that empowers students, faculty and staff to harness AI’s potential – in the classroom, the lab or in other scholarly and creative pursuits,” Agnew said.

The university’s Information Technology Services team will oversee the rollout, offering training and resources to support responsible and effective use.

Access to Claude became available Sept. 24 through an online portal.
