The Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) is looking to address the learning loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic by giving out $1 million in grants for summer learning programs in Washington state, DEEL announced.
Nineteen organizations were given awards that ranged from $11,400 to $75,000 for programs that will provide science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities and reading, writing, and math support, as well as college tours, work-based learning, and more.
“Our students and school communities are still feeling the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and periods of remote instruction on student achievement and well-being, especially for youth disproportionately affected by systemic inequities in education,” DEEL Director Dwane Chappelle said.
“DEEL’s investment will provide community organizations with funding to enhance learning opportunities that will foster student success for historically underserved youth in our city,” he added.
The funds were awarded through Seattle’s Family, Education, Preschool, and Promise Levy. The grant’s awardees include three first-time grantees. All programs will run between June and September 2022.
