New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced $52.6 million in broadband infrastructure awards that will build 234 miles of new fiber and establish 46 wireless hubs, delivering affordable, high-speed internet to over 24,000 households, businesses, and anchor institutions in the state.
The awards were made possible through the Municipal Infrastructure Program (MIP), Affordable Housing Connectivity Program (AHCP), and Deployment Program County Partnerships.
“New York State is leading the nation in closing the digital divide once and for all,” Gov. Hochul said in an Aug. 21 press release. “Today’s $52 million in awards represents our commitment to connecting communities that need it most. In today’s economy, broadband isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity for education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and full participation in modern life.”
According to the press release, the awards will bring high-speed internet to 19,000 affordable housing units. In some cases, broadband internet service will be available at prices as low as $10 per month. In all cases, the broadband will include high-speed options below regional average prices.
The awards build on previous investments by the ConnectALL initiative, which has a goal of connecting every New Yorker by 2030. The initiative is investing more than $1 billion to build broadband infrastructure.
ConnectALL has already awarded more than $13 million through AHCP grants to connect more than 12,000 affordable housing units, along with $242.5 million in MIP grants to deliver high-speed internet to an additional 105,000 households statewide.
“Expanding broadband access strengthens New York’s economy and improves quality of life,” said Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight.
“These awards will help to connect more than 24,000 households – including affordable housing residents – with high-speed service,” Knight added. “By giving small businesses, the tools to grow, students and workers the ability to succeed, and families access to critical services, we are building stronger, more connected communities across the state.”
A full list of the awardees can be found in the governor’s office press release.
