Over the last few months, there has been a significant leadership shakeup in state and local governments across the country.
Here’s a state-by-state rundown of recent cyber and technology leadership changes:
Arizona
In July, Gov. Doug Ducey appointed Tim Roemer, his deputy legislative affairs director, as the new state CISO. Roemer replaced former CISO Mike Lettman, who stepped down last December after serving in the role for seven years.
Arizona also saw changes in the CIO role, with state CIO Morgan Reed stepping down in July. Reed, who is returning to the private sector, served in the CIO role for four years. Deputy CIO J.R. Sloan was named interim CIO while a formal search is being conducted.
Colorado
Colorado CTO David McCurdy announced he will leave the position on Oct. 5 to open a consulting firm. Following his departure, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CTO Dan Santangelo will serve as the interim CTO while the state undertakes a search for a permanent replacement.
Connecticut
Connecticut’s first Chief Data Officer, Tyler Kleykamp, stepped down from state government. Kleykamp had held the position since its creation in 2014. The state has not announced his replacement.
Illinois
Chicago CIO Danielle DuMerer left city government on July 12. DuMerer will be staying in Chicago in her new role as vice president of technology at Shedd Aquarium. Chicago CTO and First Deputy Commissioner Carleton Nolan will serve as interim CIO.
Iowa
Gov. Kim Reynolds announced July 30 the appointment of Annette Dunn as CIO effective Aug. 5, 2019. Dunn replaced Jeff Franklin, former deputy CIO and information security officer for the Department of Natural Resources, who had served as interim CIO following Robert von Wolffradt departure in January of this year.
Kansas
On Aug. 21, Gov. Laura Kelly appointed DeAngela Burns-Wallace, who is also secretary of the Department, the new CIO for the Kansas Office of Information Technology Services. Burns-Wallace replaces Lee Allen, who served in the position for a little more than a year.
Maryland
Maryland’s first CISO, John Evans, resigned last month after only holding the position since June of this year. Evans has logged four years with the state government, previously serving as the deputy CTO and CISO for Maryland’s Department of Information Technology. Deputy CISO Chip Stewart will serve as the state’s acting CISO.
Michigan
Phil Bertolini left his position as CIO of Oakland County, Mich., on Aug. 30. Bertolini served in local government for 31 years and was replaced by Michael Timm, Oakland County’s IT director.
Minnesota
Jeff Nyberg joined the Minnesota state government on Sept. 3 as its new CTO. Nyberg replaced Acting Commissioner and CTO Bill Poirier.
Missouri
A year after joining state government, Michael Cheles announced late last month that he will be retiring from his position as CIO at the end of this year. Cheles assumed the position in October 2018 and replaced Acting CIO Rich Kliethermes, who had been serving in an interim capacity since 2015. The state has not announced who will replace Ruess on either an interim or permanent basis. However, the state has posted a job listing for a new Deputy CIO on its website.
Nevada
Michael Dietrich, Nevada’s CIO and deputy director of Administration, stepped down on Sept. 30 to rejoin the private sector. Dietrich served in the role for 18 months. The state has not announced his replacement.
New York
Former New York State CIO Robert Samson, who MeriTalk interviewed in 2017, retired in August. Samson, who was appointed to the role in 2017, came out of retirement to oversee the state’s Office of Information Technology. Joseph Rabito will serve as interim CIO until a permanent CIO is appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
North Dakota
North Dakota CIO Shawn Riley announced Sept. 13 that Kevin Parker will serve as the state’s chief reinvention officer (CRO). Parker previously served as the Group CIO for the Illinois Department of Innovation & Technology. Parker replaces Julie Cabinaw. In his new role, Parker is responsible for “driving statewide strategic initiatives around reinvention through technology, training, digital engagement, and enhancing the user experience for citizens and stakeholders,” according to a press release.
Oklahoma
State CIO Bo Reese and Digital Transformation and Administration Secretary David Ostrowe announced that Matt Singleton is Oklahoma’s new CISO. Singleton joined the state government in July of this year.
Pennsylvania
The state announced in July of this year that it was looking to add a new Chief Data Officer to the state government.
South Dakota
Gov. Kristi Noem announced on Sept. 5 that Heather Perry, who previously served in the Bureau of Human Resources, will serve as interim commissioner of the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications. Perry started in her new role on September 9. The role was previously held by state CIO Pat Snow.
Vermont
After serving less than a year as Vermont’s CISO, Nicholas Andersen left his position to join the Executive Office of President Trump. Deputy CISO Scott Carbee will step in as the CISO on an interim basis.
Washington
Washington state CIO and Director of Washington Technology Services Jim Weaver announced Sept. 23 that Vinod Brahmapuram will serve as the state’s CISO effective Oct. 21. Brahmapuram was previously the deputy CISO for the state of South Carolina. He replaces Ron Buchanan who left the position on Sept. 6.
