The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is launching one of the nation’s first bachelors of fine arts degree programs in creative computing – saying it will center on emerging technology as a method of storytelling and cultural critique.

Students can enroll in the degree program starting in fall 2026 and can specialize in one of five areas including game design, music technology, coding for design, spatial computing, or human-centered artificial intelligence (AI).

Course material will give students a foundation in computer science, electrical engineering, signal processing, virtual and augmented reality, robotics, and AI/machine learning.

“The program also allows undergraduates to develop a strong, personal artistic voice and to use technology as a tool for storytelling, cultural critique, and creative exploration,” said CalArts officials.

The school’s vision for the program is that, “Students will graduate prepared to lead in the expanding world of creative technologies and define the creative industries of the future,” said Interim Provost Michael Bryant in a statement.

During their studies, students will also have opportunities to create real-world projects, multimedia concerts, and technological explorations that will integrate AI “in new ways,” according to the program’s website.

School officials said the program was also created in tandem with other ongoing initiatives and programs, including a center for artists and technology that “positions artists at the forefront of shaping the evolving technologies that define our world.”

CalArts is currently accepting applications for its BFA program, officials said.
