The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has fully deployed an artificial intelligence-powered traffic signal software system across more than 2,500 intersections statewide.
The rollout, undertaken in partnership with tech firm Flow Labs, represents the largest live statewide deployment of AI signal operations software in the country, according to a July 7 news release from Flow Labs.
“North Carolina didn’t just invest in a new tool – they embraced a new model for traffic operations,” said Jatish Patel, CEO of Flow Labs, in a statement. “NCDOT’s leadership and engineering teams are among the most progressive and mission-driven in the nation. Their willingness to act decisively and deploy smarter solutions at scale has made this partnership incredibly rewarding.”
The AI system uses advanced machine learning and high-penetration connected vehicle data which provides continuous intersection performance and enables issue detection that improves intervention based on traffic patterns.
It also improves signal operations “without relying on field studies, hardware deployments, or infrastructure changes,” according to the release.
“This isn’t a plan or a future vision – it’s a fully deployed statewide system that’s delivering value today,” said Patel.
Flow Labs also recently partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation to help accurately estimate real-time intersection data including traffic volumes by deploying its on-premise High-Definition Engineering Intersection Data via Integrative Modeling (HEIDI) system.
The cloud-based system integrates real-time data from existing detection systems with high-penetration connected vehicle probe data to improve visibility into intersection dynamics, the company said.
