Next week, 16,000 educators will descend on Denver for ISTE 2016. The International Society for Technology in Education’s (ISTE) annual conference runs June 26-29 and will feature 1,000 sessions highlighting technology in education. Once at the conference, be sure to follow along on social media by using #ISTE16.
Before heading off to Denver, here’s a preview of what to expect at ISTE 2016:
- Michio Kaku will give the opening keynote address on June 26 from 5:45-7 p.m. MT. Kaku is a futurist and theoretical physicist who makes science accessible for all audiences. His presentations include topics such as the science of dreams, what makes a super genius, the evolution of intelligence, and the two greatest scientific mysteries.
- Ruha Benjamin, an assistant professor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University, will give a keynote address on June 28 from 9-10:15 a.m. MT. Benjamin specializes in the interdisciplinary study of science, medicine, biotechnology, race-ethnicity and gender, health, and biopolitics.
- Michelle Cordy, a third grade teacher in London, Ontario, will deliver the closing keynote address on June 29 from 2:45-4 p.m. MT. Cordy’s educational focus is on mathematics education, technology integration, and the social aspects of the internet.
On June 27 from 2:30-4:15 p.m. MT, ISTE will host a series of five mini keynote addresses from:
- Ayah Bdeir, founder and CEO of littleBits, an open-source library of modular electronics that snap together with magnets.
- Amelia Rose Earhart, the first woman to fly around the world in a single-engine aircraft.
- Marley Dias, an 11-year-old from West Orange, N.J., who grew tired of reading books in her middle school classes about “white boys and their dogs” and her mother, Janice Johnson Dias, who helped found GrassROOTS Community Foundation.
- Caleb Harper, principal investigator and director of the Open Agriculture Initiative (OpenAG) at the MIT Media Lab.

Refreshing the ISTE Standards for Teachers: Share Your Perspective
2-4 p.m. MT in CCC 706
ISTE is refreshing the ISTE Standards, the definitive framework for amplifying learning with technology. This interactive forum is designed to enable educators to share their perspective on what should be included in the 2017 ISTE Standards for Teachers and how educators can interact effectively with the 2016 ISTE Standards for Students. The panel will be made up of ISTE staff. - June 27
Transforming Learning Through Collaboration and Community
4:15-5:15 p.m. MT in CCC 302
This session will cover how schools can use technology to build community to redefine the classroom, enhance learning environments, and improve student performance. Panelists will include Andrew Moore, CIO, Boulder Valley School District (Colo.); Barbara Nemko, County superintendent of schools in Napa, Calif.; Stephen Noonoo, editor, eSchool Media; and Mike Patterson, K-12 education strategist, CDW-G. - June 28
Navigating the Student Privacy Landscape
This session highlights distinct perspectives on student data privacy. In the session, Emil Ahangarzadeh, managing coordinator of technology integration services at Santa Ana Unified School District (Calif.), brings a district perspective; Adam Rosenzweig, author, Schoolzilla speaks to the vendor’s perspective; and Bill Fitzgerald, director of the Privacy Initiative, Common Sense Media, describes what privacy evaluators look for. - June 29
Effective Project-based Learning in High School
8-10 a.m. MT in CCC Lobby D, Table 21
Presenters Casey Cohen and Barbara Ledford, both teachers at Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School: A String Theory School, will share how they write original curricula for high school courses grounded in projects that drive inquiry and learning. Participants will learn effective project design and assessment, as well as view examples of projects and student work created in core high school subjects.
