Clemson University launched a campus-wide artificial intelligence (AI) initiative aimed at coordinating teaching, research, and public engagement around the responsible use of AI, the university announced.
The Clemson University AI Initiative is a cross-disciplinary effort designed to bring together faculty, staff, and students to support what the university describes as a “human-centered approach to AI.” The initiative will serve as a central hub for learning, research, workforce development, and engagement with the public.
By aligning academic and operational expertise, the initiative is intended to accelerate applied research and expand Clemson’s impact across South Carolina and nationally.
The effort is led by faculty members Mitch Shue and Nathan McNeese. Shue is provost fellow for AI and a professor of practice in the School of Computing. He also serves as executive director of the AI Research Institute for Science and Engineering. McNeese is associate vice president for technology and innovation, the McQueen Quattlebaum endowed professor of human-centered computing, and founding director of the Clemson University Center for Human-AI Interaction, Collaboration, and Teaming.
“Artificial intelligence is rapidly shaping how we live, work and learn,” Shue said. “At Clemson, we see an opportunity not only to explore new technologies but to ensure their responsible use, rooted in human creativity, ethics, and collaboration.”
According to the university’s announcement, the initiative will bring together members of the Clemson community and industry partners to guide the responsible use of AI in ways that enhance creativity, advance research, and expand access to emerging technologies.
“AI is not merely a computational endeavor; it is a human one that demands thoughtful design and stewardship in how we approach it,” McNeese said. “This initiative is focused on benefiting people and connecting people and ideas across disciplines so the technologies we create and utilize are both technologically advanced and socially responsible.”
Initially, the initiative will focus on developing an overarching AI strategy for Clemson University that supports the goals of Clemson Elevate, the university’s strategic plan, while also establishing university-wide guidelines for AI use.
The university said additional updates will be shared in the coming months, including information on access to tools, guidelines, and opportunities for members of the Clemson community to participate in shaping the institution’s approach to AI.
