Long Island University (LIU) launched the Artificial Intelligence & Academic Innovation (AI²) Center, a hub for collaboration and experiential learning across LIU’s more than 150 academic programs.
The center will advance the university’s leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) education, research, workforce development, and academic innovation, the university said in a May 21 announcement.
“Artificial intelligence is not limited to one industry or one discipline. It is reshaping the future of how we live, work, research, and innovate,” said Mohammed Cherkaoui, who leads the AI² Center and is senior vice president for research and AI at the university. “The AI² Center positions LIU as a national leader in preparing students with the skills, experiences, and research opportunities necessary to lead in this rapidly evolving technological era.”
The AI² Center brings together the university’s AI-related academic programs, industry partnerships, advanced research initiatives, and facilities. LIU offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in AI, as well as a bachelor of engineering in digital engineering, which it said is the nation’s first.
Under the AI² Center initiative, LIU is expanding its Artificial Intelligence Competency Distinction, a 9-credit interdisciplinary credential available to students in all majors. The credential is designed to give students foundational and applied AI skills that can be used in fields including healthcare, business, education, communications, science, and the arts. Students will be able to work with postdoctoral fellows and use LIU’s 3D simulation and fabrication labs.
The initiative is also tied to LIU’s partnership with Dassault Systèmes, which established the 3DEXPERIENCE Education Center of Excellence at LIU. That center focuses on research in precision medicine, healthcare innovation, digital engineering, and AI applications.
New facilities at LIU will further support AI and scientific discovery. At the Post Campus in Brookville, N.Y., the university recently broke ground on a 40,000-square-foot science and innovation building. At the Brooklyn Campus, LIU said new 3D design, simulation, and fabrication labs will provide students and researchers with access to advanced technologies and experiential learning environments.
“Artificial intelligence is transforming every aspect of society, and LIU is committed to leading that transformation through education, research, and innovation,” said LIU President Kimberly Cline. “The AI² Center reflects our vision for the future of higher education, one that prepares students across every discipline to thrive in an AI-driven economy.”
