The Texas A&M University System named Vince Kellen as its next chief information officer (CIO) with his appointment effective Dec. 1, the university said in a press release.
In this new role, Kellen will oversee the A&M System’s IT strategy, infrastructure, enterprise systems, and data operations. His priorities include advancing digital tools that strengthen research, enhance student success, and improve efficiency across the System’s 12 universities, health science centers, and state agencies.
“Few institutions have the reach or responsibility of the Texas A&M University System,” Kellen said in a statement. “Its universities and agencies serve the people of Texas every day through education, research, and public service. I’m excited to help strengthen that work through technology that empowers our students, faculty, staff, and communities.”
Kellen brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education and enterprise IT, including a strong record of success in AI, supercomputing, and digital transformation. Most recently, he served as CIO at the University of California, San Diego, where he led major advances in high-performance computing, data analytics, and research support.
He also held senior IT leadership positions at the University of Kentucky and DePaul University.
“The key factors in Dr. Kellen’s selection are his deep experience as a higher-education CIO, his proven track record leading AI and supercomputing projects, and his commitment to process improvement and supporting business needs,” said Glenn Hegar, chancellor of the Texas A&M University System. “He has the experience and temperament to lead the A&M System in both foundational and transformative IT work.”
Kellen holds a Ph.D. in computer science focused on human-computer interaction, a master’s in e-commerce, and a bachelor’s in communications, all from DePaul University. The announcement notes he is a Fellow of the Cutter Consortium, a member of Arthur D. Little’s AMP Network, and a CIO Hall of Fame inductee.
