Illinois Chief Information Officer (CIO) Sanjay Gupta will step down later this month after serving as the CIO and director of the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology (DoIT) since 2023.

Gupta was appointed to the role after a lengthy career in both the private and public sector. Previously, Gupta served as the CIO and chief technology officer for the U​​.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Small Business Administration. He also spent nearly 20 years in management and consulting for global technology organizations and served as a board member of the Federal Technology Modernization Fund.

​During his time with the state of Illinois, Gupta worked to help DoIT advance many of its key initiatives, including improving fiscal health and accountability, developing meaningful client agency relationships and procuring capacities, and investing in the DoIT workforce.

​“I want to personally thank Secretary Gupta for his commitment to serving the State of Illinois,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “His expertise expanded DoIT’s impact across technology and innovation sectors and improved our collaboration with Illinois client agencies. I’m grateful for his work and wish him all the best in his next endeavors.”

​​Brandon Ragle will serve as DoIT’s interim secretary beginning on March 21, 2025. He has been with DoIT for more than eight years, most recently serving as deputy secretary.
