Emporia State University (ESU) is partnering with the Emporia Senior Center to improve cyber awareness among senior citizens in the Emporia, Kan., community.
ESU’s Cybersecurity Research and Outreach Center (CyROC) – which donated two computers to the senior center – raises awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and regularly hosts seminars and camps, and encourages research in the field.
The university has a long history with the senior center, dating back to 1983 when the school’s honor society helped raise money to open the center.
“It is quite rewarding to see the Senior Center still in use some 40 years later,” said Mark Kendall, a former member of the ESU Blue Key Honor Society.
In addition to the donation of two new computers, CyROC leaders said they plan to set up education programs about cybersecurity for senior citizens. While those efforts help senior citizens in the community, they also provide hand-on learning opportunities for CyROC students who will get to participate in the cyber training.
“We are excited to have this opportunity to not only give back to our community, but also provide a hands-on experience for our students,” said Leticia Rust, CyROC senior director. “As an added bonus, we are honored to help our community seniors with their technology and cybersecurity needs.”
